    Rubber Floor Mats

CrossFit rubber gym mats can be used as a stand-alone mat or a full room mat. They work great in weight lifting areas to protect your subfloor from heavyweights that are dropped. They are also easier to move around. The only downside to CrossFit rubber mats is that they may move and shift around.

    Horse Stall Mats

Believe it or not, lots of CrossFit gyms also use horse stall mats for their flooring, especially when they are starting out. A pro of these mats is that they are cheaper, but the con is that you get what you pay for. While this is a cheap and convenient option, it doesn’t provide the best protection for your subfloor.

7 Qualities of a Great Crossfit Floor

Flooring can easily get overlooked because, let's face it -- there's nothing super exciting about it, right? But flooring is actually the most important step you can take to creating a gym that will be used for years to come.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when trying to decide on a new floor option:

    Is the material durable?

Your gym will take a beating no matter how many times you use it. That's why you need a floor that's durable enough to stand up to it. No matter if it is dropped weights, heavy equipment, or heavy foot traffic, you need a durable material, like rubber, that can take the wear and tear.

    Will my equipment be protected?

Your subfloor isn't the only thing that needs protection, so does your equipment. It's important to install a floor that will protect your equipment when it's thrown, dropped, or kicked around.

    Do you feel safe?

You need flooring that provides good traction. You'll be lifting and pulling heavy weights, so it's important to have a flooring that provides the footing you need to help prevent any serious injuries.

Will the floor have any seams?

The last thing you want when doing quick movements or lifting something heavy is to have uneven footing. You need a floor that has an even surface with no uneven joints or seams.

    Will the floor absorb impact?

Whether you mean to drop weight, or it was a failed lift, you don't want that weight bouncing back up at you. Make sure you get a floor that keeps the weight where it is to prevent any injuries.

Will the floor protect our bodies?

A flooring that has excellent shock absorption won't only protect your equipment, but it will also protect our joints as well. If you have a floor that has a little give to it, it will make things easier on your back, knees, and ankles.

    Will it be more comfortable?

Pushups, stretching, and a lot of other exercises are done on the floor. You don't want to suffer doing those on bare, hard, cold cement, do you? That's why it's important to find something that will make those floor workouts more comfortable for you.

    What Thickness Do You Need?

There's no denying it - rubber flooring is the best option for your CrossFit gym. But what thickness is the best option to go with? This is probably the most important decision to make.

Here are some of the best options:

    8mm Rubber Flooring

You really shouldn't go any thinner than this for a CrossFit gym. While this is thin, it will work well for a garage gym that won't see as much abuse as a commercial gym does.

    3/8" Rubber Flooring

This is all the thickness you'll need to protect your flooring while still getting it at an affordable price.

    1/2" (and up) Rubber Flooring

You can go thicker and use a ½" flooring or thicker if you want to, but it isn't necessary. However, will cost more too due to the larger thickness.

    How to Clean Crossfit Floor?

CrossFit can get messy. We're talking about chalk that's used to help get a tighter grip, on top of dirt bought in from everyone's shoes, and sweat that drips after a hard workout. So, you need to keep your floor clean and germ-free. The good news? These floors are extremely easy to clean and maintain.

Here are some tips on how to clean a CrossFit floor:

    • Sweeping your mats and flooring first is the best way to get the cleanest floor. If you don't sweep off the chalk or dirt, then it could turn to mud in your mop water.
    • Next, if you're using a disinfectant, read labels first. Some of these products can cause skin irritation or could make the metal on your equipment rust. When using a disinfectant, make sure you spray it and give it enough time to kill the germs.
    • If you used a disinfectant, ensure you mop or scrub it off with plain water.
    • Now it's time to mop your floor with a cleaner. All you need is a small amount of mild soap and water.
    • Don't use too much cleaner, this could cause build up on the mats. Make sure the cleaner is low foaming and neutral.
    • Use hot water while cleaning the mat because this will help clean better and will also dry quicker.
    • Open all the doors and windows and turn on fans so the mats will dry quicker.

How can you eliminate noise complaints in a CrossFit gym?

CrossFit rubber flooring tiles provide excellent shock absorption and will help with the sound absorption. You may also have to add some soundproofing panels if you have higher ceilings.

How often should I clean my gym mats?

This really depends on how often the mats are used, what they are used for, and if they are in a commercial environment or not. It's a good idea to sweep off dirt, sand, and other debris anytime you see it on the floor and wipe up any spills or sweat with a mild household cleaner. You can mop the mats weekly or bi-weekly to keep them in top shape.
